In 2007 I was selected to sculpt a sculpture of Chief Pocatello for the city of Pocatello, Idaho. The city was named after Chief Pocatello.
The sculpture is 16 feet tall, and is sculpted from Idaho travertine.
The original design had a peace pipe held in the right hand. While meeting with 14 of Chief Pocatello's descendants, they indicated that they would
prefer that no peace pipe be in the sculpture, since Chief Pocatello never smoked the peace pipe with the white men. I agreed, and it was then decided that Chief Pocatello would hold a Ceramonial Staff in his right hand, and a
bag in his left hand. We also agreed that he would be clothed in buckskin, wear a "War Bonnet", and wear a bear claw necklace.
Having agreed on all aspects of the sculpture, I began carving on August 24, 2007
The top portion of the sculpture was 4' X 4' X 9', and weighed 13 tons. The base was 4' X 4' X 7', and weighed 8 tons. The finished
sculpture weighs about 15 tons.
The sculpture was dedicated on July 26, 2008
